Past Continuous Tense is one of the most important tenses in English language.

Use of Past Continuous Tense

 

Past Continuous Tense is used to show an action which is going on for some time in the past.
Ex- That little girl was talking to an outsider when her mother called her.
It is also used to denote repeated action in the past.
Ex– Neil was always looking to and fro.

Helping verb of Past Continuous Tense

 

There are two helping verbs used in Past Continuous Tense. These are-
‘Was’ and ‘Were’.
Was- It is used with Singular Nouns.
Were– It is used with Plural Nouns.

Form of the verb is used in Past Continuous Tense

 

ING form of the verb which is also known as Past Participating form of the verb used in Past Continuous Tense.

Affirmative Sentence:-
Subject+ Helping verb+ Verb+ Other words
Note- In Other words, phrase/ clause/ complement comes.
1- They were washing clothes in the washing-machine.
Here in the sentence,
Subject- They
Helping verb- Were
Verb- washing
Other words- clothes in the washing- machine
2- You were supporting others.
Here in the sentence,
Subject- You
Helping verb- Were
Verb- Supporting
Other words- Others
3- She was studying hard to get good marks in examination.
Here in the sentence,
Subject- She
Helping verb- Was
Verb- Studying
Other words- Hard to get good marks in examination

Some examples of affirmative sentence in Past Continuous Tense

  1. I was wondering about his work.
  2. That boy was looking mysterious.
  3. You were thinking about him.
  4. He was practicing Yoga in the ground.

 

Negative Sentence-
Subject+ Helping verb+ Not (Any negation word)+ Verb+ Other words
1- My father was not visiting for business purpose.

Verb- Visiting

2- You were not playing table tennis.

Here in the sentence,
