Countable Noun:- Nouns which we can count is known as Countable Noun.

What is Uncountable Noun?

Uncountable Noun:- Nouns which we can not count is known as Uncountable Noun.

For example- Sugar, water, rice etc.

Point to remember- We can change number of Countable Noun but we can not change number of Uncountable Noun.

Example-
Pen‘ is a Countable Noun so we can change number of pen which is ‘pens‘.
Sand‘ is an Uncountable Noun so we can not change its number.

Singular and Plural Nouns

Noun number is divided into two parts:-

  1. Singular number
  2. Plural number

Singular number:-  Singular number denotes only a single or one similar Noun.

For example- Boy, mobile phone and fan etc.

Plural number:- Plural number denotes more than one similar Nouns.

For example- Boys, mobile phones and fans etc.
In both examples of singular number and plural number, we have seen similar nouns but the difference is ( boy, mobile phone and fan) are showing singular number whereas (boys, mobile phones and fans) are showing plural number.
Here is various rules to change singular noun in plural noun.
There are different rules regarding pluralization of Noun, it depends on what letter a noun is.

Rules to change singular noun in plural noun:-

1. If we are getting a word which ends with consonant so while making plural number of that particular word, add ‘s‘ in the last of the word.

Eg- Girl- Girls
     Dog- Dogs
     Pencil- Pencils

2.If in the last of the word s, ch, x, es, ss, sh or z comes then while making plural form of noun, we add ‘es‘ in the word.

Eg- Bus- Buses
     Class – Classes
     Fox- Foxes
     Blitz- Blitzes
     Bench- Benches
    Truss- Trusses

(Exception– In some cases, when we are getting ‘s’ or ‘z’ in the last of the word so while changing into plural form, we do doubling of ‘s’ or ‘z’ then we add ‘es’ in that word).

Eg- Gas- Gasses
      Fez- Fezzes

    
3.If in the last of the singular noun, we are getting ‘y‘ so while changing into plural number, we replace ‘y’ with ‘i‘ and add ‘es‘ in that word.

Eg- Baby- Babies
      Teddy- Teddies
      City- Cities

(Exception– When we get ‘y’ in the last of singular noun and before ‘y’ if we are getting any vowel so for making plural form, we simply add ‘s’ in the last of that word.)

Eg-  Monkey- Monkeys
        Donkey-Donkeys

4.If in the last of the singular noun we are getting ‘f‘ or ‘fe‘ so for making plural form, we replace ‘f’ or ‘fe‘ with ‘v‘ and add ‘es‘ in that word.

Eg-  Leaf- Leaves
      Wife- Wives
      Wolf- Wolves

(Exception– If in the last we are getting ‘f’ or ‘fe’ which is followed by a vowel then for making plural we simply add ‘s’ in that word.)

Eg- Roof- Roofs
      Chief- Chiefs
      Chef-Chefs

5.If singular noun ends with ‘o‘ then for making plural number add ‘es‘ in the last of that word.

Eg- Potato- Potatoes
       Tomato- Tomatoes

(Exception– some exceptional words are there for making plural form, you need to add ‘s’ only when it ends with ‘o’ in singular noun.)

Eg- Photo- Photos
      Piano- Pianos

Volcano‘ is an unique word which ends with vowel ‘o‘. For making plural form, we have both choices is to add ‘s‘ or ‘es‘.  Both are correct.

Volcano- Volcanoes
Volcano- Volcanos

6.If the noun ends with ‘is‘ then for pluralization, replace ‘is‘ and add ‘es‘ in the last of word.

Eg-  Analysis- Analyses
      Ellipsis – Ellipses

7.If the singular noun ends with ‘us‘ then for pluralization, replace ‘us‘ with ‘i’.

Eg- Cactus- Cacti
      Focus- Foci

8.If the singular noun ends with ‘on‘ then for making plural form, replace ‘on‘ with ‘a’.

Eg- Phenomenon- Phenomena
      Criterion- Criteria

Some Nouns don’t change when they’re pluralized.

Eg- Sheep- Sheep
     Deer- Deer
     Series- Series

9.Irregular Nouns follow no specific rules so it’s best to memorize them.

Eg-  Child- Children
     Man- Men
     Woman- Women
     Tooth – Teeth
     Foot- Feet
     Mouse- Mice
     Goose- Geese
    Persons- People

Note- Plural form of ‘ person‘ is ‘people‘ or ‘persons‘. Both are correct.
Note- Plural form of ‘fish‘ is ‘fish‘ itself.
